So often, I get asked to help people come up with a workout program for people. And this is a fair enough request, after all, no one wants to be wasting their time in the gym. So what I'm going to do today is list a few things I take into consideration when coming up with a workout program. I wish I could speak to you all and help you come up with the ideal workout, but it's just not possible, so you're going to have to do a little bit of learning. Lets get started!
The first thing I usually ask people when they want a workout program is how often they intend on training. This question results in some interesting answers. I get people trying to impress me by saying they'll be at the gym every day, religiously. If they've never trained before in their life, I tell them to be realistic and give me another answer.
Once they've had a bit of a think, the answer usually changes to 2-4 times a week. I then go on to ask them about their goals. Different people have different goals, so it makes sense that different people will also have different workouts. Some guys tell me that they want a six pack, some guys want to be massive, while another group of guys just want to lose weight, without looking really skinny.
So once that is taken into consideration, I come up with a split. If you don't know what I mean by "split", all it means is training which muscles on which days. It may come as a surprise to you that you don't want to be training your chest and biceps every day of the week. If I had a dollar for everytime I saw young guys doing that....
And that's almost all of it. Once I come up with a split, I have to choose which exercises to give the trainee. I'll be going into more detail about which exercises are the best in later posts, so don't worry too much if you have no idea about these.
Well, I know it's brief, but now you have seen how I decide on how to train, you should have a look at your workout and see if it really is the best way to be training.
